Everyone will agree that an IAS officer’s life is no joke. With all the emergencies, raids, frequent site visits, policies, and giving time to their families. This position is truly worth all this because the IAS officers are the ideal people. Their sense of justice, right and wrong, the execution of their plans, their vision for our betterment is excellent. I mean, an IAS officer’s personality is just out of this world. Today, in this article, we will see the Qualities of an IAS officer.
We will be looking at the behaviour of an IAS officer, what qualities should an IAS officer have, the qualities of a civil servant, and many other similar topics in this piece that we dedicate to our heroes.
So, let us begin with the main topic – The Qualities of an IAS Officer. Qualities of an IAS Officer
There are many qualities associated with an IAS officer, and we will look at a few of them in great detail. Apart from this, we will also look at the values and morality expected from our nation’s servants.
The most basic value. Sheer discipline, training your mind to follow you rather than control you. Foundation for success, father of willpower, and source of motivation – discipline.
“Motivation gets you going, but discipline keeps you going.”
“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments.”
It is an integral part of a successful person’s life. It is why our Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj conquered all of his enemies. That is the reason why LeBron is LeBron, Ronaldo is Ronaldo, and Modi is Modi. Discipline will take you to distances and help in maintaining that position.
The best way to induce discipline in your life is to set a routine. You need not get up at 5 in the morning or study for 24 hours. Set a routine and follow it. If you are meant to wake up at 7, you will wake up at 7. If you are meant to eat 4 rotis, you will eat 4 rotis. Students must set their study time-table for UPSC preparation.
It will be a little difficult at first, but you can bend it to your will and find yourself going places when you start controlling your mind.
The schedule or routine of an IAS officer can be hectic and demanding, so it is best to be disciplined since it will allow them to be highly energetic and efficient. The brain is a muscle that needs to exercise, so put stress on it as much as possible, but not too much – only what you feel will benefit you.
YOU CAN DO IT
YOU WILL DO IT
2. Love for the Country
Patriotism is a quality every citizen of India should have. Our country has it all – the history, culture, people, kings, classic stories of freedom, administrators, and so many other things. Our country even had the biggest diamond in existence – but our unfriendly guests changed that, of course.
My point is that love for one’s country can never be too much, and this same quality makes an integral part of an IAS officer’s personality. The country is first for an IAS officer, and everything else comes after.
“Patriotism is the conviction that your nation is superior to everyone else because you were born in it.”
“True patriotism is the true enemy of real injustice.”
“The greatest right of any citizen, a right above any other, is the right to be patriotic.”
Their love for their country makes IAS officers the ideal people. It is what fuels their motivation and their sense of justice. It is what gets them out of their beds and into their offices. They love their country, but they love it after knowing everything about it – the history and the events.
Just like them, we should first learn everything about something before judging it and taking its side or opposing it. True quality of IAS aspirant and a civil servant.
What is the difference between discipline and perseverance, they asked?
The same is between your mother and father. One gives you birth, and the other one gives you life. One feeds your stomach; the other feed your hunger. One keeps you going; the other keeps you going till you reach your goals.
Discipline is self-control. Perseverance is the use of that self-control to achieve your goals. Not stopping till you reach your destination is your perseverance. This is one of the greatest qualities of a civil servant. They do not know to stop till they reach their goals.
“Perseverance is stubbornness with a purpose.”
“A river cuts through a rock, not because it has the power, but because it has the perseverance.”
“Perseverance is not a long race, but a series of short races one after the other”
So to all the IAS aspirants out there – make a routine, get disciplined, and stop not till you have reached your goals. A major part of an IAS officer’s personality.

A must-have quality for any human being. The quality of being selfless. An IAS officer has to give his life for his country – something that demands selflessness of the highest order.
Helping others over yourself, putting them over yourself, putting their needs ahead of yours – that is what truly defines a human. Are you ready to put their requirements ahead of your requirements? Are you ready to give up your life for the cause of society?
That is the price you pay on top of paying for everything.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
“Give to the world the best you have, and the best will come back to you.”
“The greatest achievement for a human is achieving selflessness.”
An important part of the behaviour of IAS officers. A true essential for an administrator. A true life of a leader. The best life to live.
Administrative Qualities of an IAS Officer
The first and foremost skill or quality of a civil servant. They must have good observation skills. Ability to pay attention to even the most minute details and cover every inch of any situation.
An administrator’s leadership quality defines him and differentiates him from others. A good leader not only manages his team but is a team player as well. He works with them, sleeps with them, eats with them, and does everything.

Patience is really important for any leader and administrator. The changes he wants to see and intends to do will take time, and he has to be patient in that period. Patience pays off in any profession, and it is an integral part of being successful.
With leadership comes responsibilities – and the biggest one owns up to the mistakes you make. Being responsible for your actions and being ready for the consequences. If you want to be a great leader, you will have to own up to your mistakes, and the people under you make.
5. Analytical Ability
An administrator will first have to analyze the situation to make policies and bills. Now analysis has to be done on 2 levels – one from an administrator’s perspective and one from a common population’s perspective. This is how effective policies can be made. For the people, by the people.
Determining right and wrong is a highly integral part of a leader’s life. He has to walk a path of true justice, and he has to judge every situation rightly. IAS officer has to look after his people and by his people – the general population.
He has to do right by the maximum number of people, and he has to maximize happiness for the maximum number of people. This school of ethics is called Utilitarianism. This is generally the ethics that great leaders must undertake to do the right things for their people.
“Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do.”
“A man without ethics is a wild beast loosed upon this world.”
“The time is always right to do what is right.”
Being highly ethical and virtuous is an important quality for civil servants since the whole nation idolises them. One such great example of a great civil servant is IAS Deepak Rawat. You can find his videos on YouTube. A great human being with great qualities.
